History of the Breed

The Samoyed is an ancient and remarkable breed with a history deeply rooted in Siberia. Bred by the Samoyed people, a semi-nomadic group from northern Russia and Siberia, these dogs were essential companions for survival in some of the harshest climates on Earth.

Purpose

The Samoyedic people relied on these dogs for herding reindeer, pulling sleds, and providing warmth by sleeping alongside their owners in the freezing Arctic temperatures.

Western Introduction

Samoyeds were brought to Europe and later North America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when explorers sought strong, cold-resistant dogs for Arctic and Antarctic expeditions. Notably, they played a critical role in polar exploration, including Sir Ernest Shackleton’s and Fridtjof Nansen’s expeditions

Historic Traits

Their signature thick, white coat helped them endure sub-zero temperatures. They developed the "Sammy smile," an upturned mouth shape that prevents icicles from forming around their lips. Known for being intelligent, friendly, and energetic, they retained their cooperative and affectionate temperament from their close bonds with humans.

Modern Samoyeds

Today, Samoyeds are known for their loyal, affectionate nature and high energy levels. They excel in sledding, agility sports, and companionship. Their friendly, social disposition makes them great family dogs, but they require consistent exercise and grooming due to their thick fur and energetic temperament.
